HELP PLEASE! Nikon D3000 "error press shutter release button again"?

I got the Nikon d3000 for christmas. and i was just taking a normal picture. the setters were on auto which i never use but for some reason i just had it on auto. i took a picture, it worked but then it said error press shutter release button again. and every time i press it it makes a weird noise and doesn't take a picture. i'm really scared that its broken! but i didn't even do anything! it didn't drop or anything! :( what do i do? can i fix it? or call nikon or something?
