What makes things get blasted away by an explosion?

The speed and distance of the object would depend on the force of the explosion and the mass of the object. There are shows about this on the Science channel and NatGeo and even the History channel. A recent episode of Known Universe talked about it, just a week or two ago. The show was about escaping Earth's gravity.
